Ancient and modern ink-wash paintings and calligraphy work will go under the hammer of the Rongbaozhai Art Auction House, one of China’s oldest auction houses, this weekend at Regal International East Asia Hotel in Shanghai.
Big names include Wang Duo (1592-1652), Qi Baishi (1864-1957), Xu Beihong (1895-1953), Zhang Daqian (1899-1983), Guan Liang (1900-1986) and Lin Fengmian (1900-1991).
One of the highlights goes to Jiang Rong (1919-2008), a master in making purple-clay teapots. Her purple-clay teapots have been given as diplomatic gifts in the past. She was especially noted for her uniquely carved designs and patterns.
Another spotlight of the auction is Xu Beihong’s ink-wash painting of bamboo. Xu was a master painter, art educator and a pioneer of modern Chinese painting.
Born in Yixing in east China’s Jiangsu Province, Xu began to study Chinese classics and calligraphy at the age of 6. In 1917, Xu went to Japan to study arts, and two years later the young artist received a government scholarship for training at the prestigious École Nationale Supérieure des Beaux-Arts in Paris, where he learned oil painting and drawing.
Later, he also traveled to several other European countries, such as Germany and Belgium, to further his study of Western painting techniques. His eight years in Europe greatly influenced Xu’s painting style.
